April Marie Salazar

"My success as a professional does not mean failure as a woman or as a mother." --APRIL M. SALAZAR

my story

Although April describes her childhood as one with fond memories, there's no doubt she was forced to grow up quicker than most. One thing April remembers most about her childhood, is the determination fueled by love that her mother consistently showed them. She is the reason why April became the first in her family to graduate with a college degree, and she is the reason April appreciates stability in one's life. Unfortunately, however, she couldn't protect her completely. Abuse can show itself through many different faces. From hiding around the corner as household items were thrown and broken in aggression and immense anger, to witnessing her mother being beaten almost weekly, her eight year old self learned to harden her heart and brace for the next episode. What followed, in many ways, solidified her lack of faith in mankind. Attempted rape by family members, exposure to men in ways she was unable to comprehend at the time, and watching first-hand the consequences of drug abuse became part of her reality. All of the different faces of this abuse were lasting. Despite all of this, April continued to believe there was more that she was meant for. She knew that her circumstances were not ones that would mold her forever and fought against the toxicity with a vengeance. In many ways, she learned then, how to breathe underwater. Those experiences will forever be burned into her mind as a reminder of what life doesn't have to look like. Her journey led her to where she is today and continuing to share her story has become an important part of her life’s mission.
